mural obama

Serge Toussaint, a Miami-based, Haitian muralist, has been forced to paint over a part of one of his murals that depicts Martin Luther King, Jr. and Barack Obama because of insufficient permits. Except Toussaint was commissioned to paint the mural.

The Miami Herald reports that Toussaint was paid $3,000 by a city organization to paint the concrete poles of an I-95 underpass, employing the city’s motif of blues skies and clouds. However, he also painted a mural depicting Martin Luther King Jr and Barack Obama on the highway wall. Instead of appreciating the extra effort Toussaint made, this created quite a controversy. Elaine Black, president of the Liberty City Community Revitalization Trust, said, “We did not pay Serge to do that…He decided to put that one up.”

Two weeks after the mural was painted, an anonymous caller notified the Florida Department of Transportation, which ordered Toussaint to paint over Obama. Toussant reluctantly obeyed, but the FDOT also said that the picture of King might need to be removed as well, because it does not fit the original permit description.

“It was the most hurtful thing in my life,” Toussaint says, recalling taking a can of white acrylic to his Obama. “I cry. I cry. My wife tells me it’s okay, but it hurts me that they made me paint it off.”

The artist used white primer to cover Obama, and new callers have now accused him of “whitewashing” the presidential candidate. Read More here.

 graffiti bust

Vandals who bragged about their graffiti sprees on the internet have been captured by police in a series of early-morning raids. Officers seized more than 50 aerosol cans, canvasses and several computers in four swoops at houses in Peterborough and Norwich, in a crackdown on gangs who deface railway bridges, underpasses, homes and businesses with their ugly scrawls.

Detectives were hot on their trail after discovering a portfolio of photos showing their tags stretching from Orton to Stanground on the myspace website.

Candy Srichandr, tko stripper, tko graffiti

Awhile back we had made a post “ TKO Stripper on the run“. Graffiti artist Candy Srichandr, in the graffiti crew TKO was on the run for shooting up a rival graffiti crew art show.

In the middle on the night on February 8, 2008, cops say Candy Srichandr was nabbed in Long Beach, Calif. Investigators were tracking her journey with the assistance of your leads, and they knew for sure she was hiding out in St. Louis and parts of Colorado.

It wasn’t until an anonymous tipster contacted a U.S. Marshal in Los Angeles to tell him that Srichandr may be hiding out at a residence in Long Beach. Our investigator and his team headed out to the location — but not expecting to find Srichandr.

They honestly thought she was still in Colorado. To their surprise, she was inside the residence, arrested her immediately, and shipped her off to the Van Nuys station in the San Fernando Valley. She’s locked behind bars, and awaiting her hearing with a judge.
