On October 31, 2011 there was the unfortunate train accident where 3 Montreal teens were killed by VIA Train 668. Shelley Reddam, a mother of one of the surviving teens has been trying to prevent accidents like this from happening again. Railway companies dim their lights when passing through residential areas, which can prevent people from seeing the on coming train. Shelley has an online petition trying to get Parliament to create a Bill that would make it law for areas such as these where trains “Dim” their lights, to be out fitted with large street lamp solar energy motion detector lights, with enough frequency to light up areas such as where this tragedy occurred.
While gathering signatures for the petition, Shelley has also created a song to make people aware of the issue.
